On June 14, Day of Mourning and Commemoration, at 13.30, the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory will present the new edition of the Institute’s proceedings at the Maarjamäe Palace sculpture park. The new edition is entitled „Propaganda, Immigration, and Monuments. Perspectives on Methods Used to Entrench Soviet Power in Estonia in the 1950s-1980s.” After the book launch, all are welcome to participate at the Day of Mourning commemoration event at the Memorial for the Victims of Communism.
Editor Meelis Saueauk, Senior Researcher of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory, will introduce the new proceedings at the launch. The Institute’s Research Director Toomas Hiio will give a talk on Soviet monuments.
The 3rd edition of the Proceedings of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory analyses various methods used in establishing and shaping the Soviet social order in Estonia, including information and migration policies, the assembly of faux public representation, as well as propaganda in memory politics. The latter manifested in the destruction of memorials from the period of independence, establishing new Soviet memorials, etc. The collection of articles closely examines the fundamentals of the Soviet regime’s ideological work, an inseparable part of which was the destruction of the societal structure and consciousness of Estonia’s independence period, and replacing it with a lifestyle shaped in the spirit of Soviet doctrines.
At the launch, the book will be available for a discount price of 15€. The Proceedings is in Estonian and English.
Please note that in the event of unfavourable weather, the book launch will take place at the Maarjamäe Palace Fireplace hall.
After the launch, all are welcome to participate at the Day of Mourning commemoration event at the Memorial for the Victims of Communism in Maarjamäe. At 15.15, new name plaques will be opened at the memorial’s corridor. A commemoration ceremony and concert will take place at 16.00–17.45 in the memorial’s Home Garden.
