The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory invites researchers up to the age of 35 to participate in an international competition aimed at encouraging academic research on the history of communist ideology and the practices of communist regimes.

The competition is open to both published academic papers and unpublished Master’s and Doctoral theses. The research does not have to be related to Estonian history – works exploring the diverse impacts of communism worldwide are welcome.

Submissions will be evaluated in two categories, with prizes of €1,500 and €3,000 awarded to the best entries.

Papers may be submitted in Estonian, English, Russian, or German. For works written in other languages, a summary in one of the aforementioned languages must be provided.
The deadline for submissions is 3 November 2025.
