On the initiative of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory, Patarei Prison was illuminated with the colours of the Ukrainian flag on the commemoration day of the 1949 March Deportations on March 25. This serves as a reminder that Ukraine shares the difficult experience of Soviet occupation and terror with Estonia, and commemorates the victims of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory will establish the International Memorial Museum for the Victims of Communism in Patarei by 2026 with state support. The future museum will also cover Soviet mass repressions against the Ukrainian people.
